Sensualizing Information - My iPad Review

A quickly written assessment of the iPad after using it for 3 days while being sick...

The one thing about the iPad is to not think of it as a laptop. When I'm away from my main computer, whether it's while I'm sitting on my couch watching TV or when I'm away from home traveling, I feel like having a laptop is a little too much. The iPad is perfect for simply getting information and engaging in light interaction.

Besides just how handsomely designed it is, the first thing you're impressed with is just how amazing everything looks. Its 132dpi screen is so crystal clear with details that it seems like a crime to view images on anything less. One of my main uses for the iPad is to use it as a portfolio of my work. Not only do my images look amazing on the device, they surpass what they look like in print form (which says a lot!). It's truly astonishing. Navigating through photos is a tactile treat - swiping from image to image and having the ability to expand them larger for further detail. I know you can do that on the iPhone but being able to do it so smoothly in a larger format is beyond cool.

I used it off and on for 2 days, and only lost 50% battery power. This is going to be great on airplanes for reading books and watching videos. Speaking of books, the iBook store and app is exceptionally fun and useful. In addition to all the bestsellers and popular titles, there are thousands of free books. I'm currently reading Huckleberry Finn, and the virtual ability to turn the pages is very satisfying.

I've only begun exploring the thousands of apps, but these are my favorite free ones so far...
• New York Times - You don't get the whole paper, just a concise collection of newsworthy articles and op-eds. Reading this and other magazines on the iPad gives you the actual sensation of reading an opened physical newspaper on your lap.
• NPR - Like the New York Times, you get a concise choice of topics and news stories. Some are written articles and some are audio podcasts. You just tap on one, and it instantly plays. Very satisfying!
• IMDB - a completely different format than the website version. This version is very hands on (or fingers rather) and fun to explore with mini-windows and indexes.
• Netflix - I'm a huge fan of streaming live video from Netflix and being able to do it on this mobile device is wonderful especially watching movies in bed.
• iBooks - as mentioned above

The only real drawback I see (and it is minor) is the keypad. I don't intend on doing any serious writing on the device, so it's not really that big of a deal to me. But to type as you would on a regular keyboard (provided that you don't hunt-and-peck) is hard to do without the physical touch of keys to know where your fingers are placed. My need for typing on the iPad will be restricted to simple 2-3 sentences here and there, and in that case, the hunt-and-peck method will be fine. One more thing, fingerprints can look kind of annoying when the device is turned off. Simply breathing on the surface and wiping with a clean, cotton t-shirt works perfectly fine.

Overall, I do believe this is quite the revolutionary product, and I'm anxious to see where this format goes - both from Apple and other competitors. Information never felt so good!

A VIDEO! Shooting a video at this location was completely spontaneous. It was done rather amateurishly with my little Panasonic Lumix point-n-shoot. I had no idea at the time that it might be something worthy of showing to the world. I've never been a video-minded artist but this just came about because it felt right at the time.

I showed the video to French composer Robert Waechter who scored my GoeddeConcerto CD last year. He was kind enough to compose and record the original motion picture soundtrack.

A Krolly Christmas in Tuscon

Liz and I were able to sneak out of town for the Christmas weekend and headed to Tucson to hang out with our good friend Eric Kroll. Because of holiday traffic, it took us nearly 10 hours to drive there from Los Angeles. Once we turned into Eric's neighborhood, we were greeted by a wild bobcat in the middle of the road. That made the whole day's journey worthwhile to Liz since she's such an animal freak. We spent the evening recovering from the long day's journey getting Japanese food and watching movies.

We spent Christmas day hiking in Sabino Canyon where my leg got attacked by a Teddy Bear Cholla cactus. Other than that unpleasant experience, the air was warm, crisp, and clean, and the Saguaros were erect and stately. After sundown, we found a great Indian restaurant which was difficult since most places were closed late on Christmas day.

On Saturday we went gallery hopping. First, we saw some great photography at the Etherton Gallery and ended up at the Ansel Adams retrospective at the Tucson Museum of Art. Then off to the San Xavier Mission where I photographed its colorful, celebratory cemetery at sundown.

I had about an hour to shoot her because we were at her parents' house while they were away. I kept it simple and only brought my Yashica T4 and my new Holga pinhole camera. Dirty Show comes to Los Angeles this Weekend!

Pinhole Photography, Ohio 2009

On a recent trip to Ohio to meet my girlfriend's family, Liz took me around to many of the abandoned buildings in this once-thriving industrial city. I documented many of these locations with a Holga 35mm pinhole camera. These were all shot handheld with a minimum 10 second exposure. I opted not to use a tripod in order to give them a more painterly, organic texture. I processed the film in my kitchen and then scanned the negatives with my Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED.

(above) This weekend, fellow photographer Christine Kessler and I explored Los Angeles with our Holga film cameras. I shot mainly with my Holga pinhole camera which required me to shoot 8 second exposures. Even though I had access to a tripod, I decided to risk it and shoot the images handheld. I was surprised that the shots came out as well as they did for such long, handheld exposures.

Liz and I headed out Tuesday night to Joshua Tree for a prime viewing location for the Perseids meteor shower. I wasn't planning on taking photos but had my camera just in case inspiration would set in. At one point I decided that I would indeed set up my camera on a tripod and take some time exposures. What I captured was pretty damn cool even though I didn't actually capture any of the hundreds of meteors we saw.

Photographed with my Mamiya 645 with 120mm BW400CN film. This marks my first time shooting with a medium format film other than T-Max.

Nicotine photographed in the Mojave Desert in June 2009. It was an unusually cool day. I don't think it got above 75 degrees fahrenheit. That made the trip so much more bearable and artistically rewarding than other trips to the high desert.

Oh, and yes, we DID get out of the car. Those photos later!

It turned out quite nice considering it was unintentional. Shot with my Lumix DMC-LX2 with no Photoshop manipulation.

An out-take from my Belle shoot in 1998. I was recently going through the negatives from this shoot and found some nice, neglected images.

Back in the ye olde days of the last century, I printed all my images in the darkroom. Usually I had limited time, patience, and money to only print my favorite few shots from each session. As a result, many images never saw the light of day. But now thanks to digital scanning, I can go back and retrieve many well-deserving images.

I typically don't shoot much in the winter months. It's cold and the hours of daylight are significantly fewer in number. So I tend to work on other stuff and revisit work I shot in the past. So until it starts getting consistently warmer and sunnier, I'll be posting lost and newly found treasures from the days of yesteryear.

This is an out-take from a shoot I did in Portland in 2001 with Miss B. Havin. She was photographed in a cool house which belonged to Angela Baldwin who was the hair and make-up artist. The model was referred to me by my good friend, model, and artist Marne Lucas AKA Gina Velour. BTW, Marne currently has an art installation called Warlord Sun King: The Genesis of Eco-Baroque in Marylhurst, Oregon near Portland. Info on her site.

By 1996, I had already been pigeonholed as a fetish photographer and was eager to do erotic work which relied less on fetishistic textures and more on earthly elements. Tanya was a cool-looking girl I knew from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was just one of the many artists I met during the early hipster years of Chicago's Wicker Park in the mid-to-late 1980s.

I had wanted to go out into the country to do a shoot, so Tonya and I headed west from the shores of Lake Michigan. We got off the highway at some random exit and ended up in Lamont, Illinois. The town sounded like one of those small towns in a Tom Waits song. Going less than a mile, we discovered photography-location heaven in the form of an old car graveyard. We pulled over, and I excitedly grabbed my Mamiya from the backseat. While tearing through the thick humid air seeking something particularly pleasing to my visual aesthetic, we tried our best not to overturn flooded hubcaps which provided nurturing housing for colonies of blood-thirsty mosquitoes. Our flesh was hot, moist, and tasty that day so we had to act fast to avoid being eaten alive. We shot some random poses next to some wrecked out Buicks and then wandered deeper into the automotive wasteland. As we edged our way further in, the vegetation grew thicker and the cars got older. We soon could not forage any deeper and decided to trek back to my modern car (a 1989 Mitsubishi Mirage) where the comforts of AC awaited us. Before getting back in the car however, I noticed reflective puddles of water in the road and did a few more shots. Once in the car, we counted the number of mosquito attacks we had on our bodies and decided to head back to the big city.

At the time, I was very proud of this photo series but was disappointed that fans of my work were not appreciative of the images simply because of the lack of a fetish-oriented theme. I didn't care though. The art of photography has always been my first passion with subject matter running a distant second. I'm glad to say now that more and more people are enjoying my non-fetish and street photography. When people can appreciate my work from a non-sexual perspective, then I feel good as a photographer.

Jessica was a good friend of mine back in Chicago in the mid '90s. She wasn't part of the fetish scene but was always happy to model for me. Someone let us have access to their farm for a shoot so I brought Jessica along. I remember one of the first ideas I had was to capture Jessica mid-air on a country road. I tried it one time but didn't feel confident that I got what I was looking for. When someone jumps in the air like that, it lasts for only a half second at most, and capturing that split second with my camera seemed impossible, especially using natural light. So I gave up and moved onto other shots. It wasn't until I got the proofsheet back that I realized that I had actually gotten what I had hoped for. And the truly amazing thing is how relaxed and natural Jessica looks floating in mid-air in that 1/1000th of a second that the camera exposed the film. It was a truly random moment that worked on a technical and aesthetic level.

George Hickenlooper, my childhood friend and ace film director, introduced us while he was making Monte Hellman: American Auteur, a short documentary on the director. Hellman's cult classic Two-Lane Blacktop (Criterion) remains one of my favorite films of all time.

ERIC KROLL: A PHOTOGRAPHER'S LIFE DVD

There's a new documentary about my good friend and mentor Eric Kroll. This film has a fly-on-the-wall perspective from which we see how Eric creates his imagery both psychologically and artistically . It's interesting to view the interaction with him and his models and how he gets 'those moments', something I wish I had the gift of doing in my own photography. At first the viewer may be put-off by the amateur quality of the videography but it's quite effective and you forget about it once you get sucked into his creative mindspace. Definitely a must-see for anyone appreciative of erotic photography and how one artist captures his vision without any compromise.

Aradia, Tucson 2008 (Holga)

In my quest to bring my photography back to its most basic form and avoiding as much modern digital technology as possible, I decided to start experimenting with a Holga camera. Film, simplistic camera, random composition and exposure. Of course I still have to use digital technology to scan the negs and then save the image via Photoshop™. No manipulation was used here. Even the toning was the result of the RGB scanning in automatic mode.

I had shot Aradia at Eric Kroll's house in Tucson over the summer, and this was my first chance to experiment with my new Holga. When we left, I accidentally left the camera (with the film in it) outside in the sun, and it wasn't rescued until Eric came back to the location about a month later. I thought for sure the film had been baked since the average temperature in Tucson during the summer is around 110 degrees! So I finally had the film processed to see if there was anything remotely salvageable. To my surprise, all the exposures were fine, and there were absolutely no light leaks which is odd since Holgas are known for that.

The Beauty of Fetish - 10 Year Anniversary

Back in 1997 I decided I had shot enough quality work to start pursuing publishers about doing a book. I had saved up some money and thought I'd spend a year or so submitting my work to various publishers. Edition Stemmle had always been my favorite photography publisher. Their books were always spectacularly designed and were printed on the most luxurious papers imaginable. Their catalog of artists included many of my favorites, such as Ralph Gibson, Irina Ionesco, Nobuyoshi Araki, Kristin Capp, Ferit Kuyas, Lewis Hine, Tony Ward, Andreas H. Bitesnich, Skrebneski, and Andy Warhol. So it was them that I approached first.

I don't remember what exactly I sent them but all I know is that a week later I got a fax from them saying that they were interested and wanted to see more work. So excitedly I sent them a huge box of prints. Within a few weeks, pre-production and design of the book started. Although based in Zurich, they arranged a meeting with me in New York at their US distributor's office. I remember laying all my images out on a huge conference table in a swanky room with floor-to-ceiling windows which looked out over the World Trade Center which was across the street. Because it was my first book, and I was star-struck by being with my favorite publisher, I pretty much let them have their way with the book. My biggest regret is allowing them to reproduce the book images from small 8x10 prints. That's why a lot of the images in the book are slightly fuzzy. Most people say they like that quality assuming it was part of my style. Only I know just how crisp those images actually are. I also let them come up with the title of the book which I really didn't care for and still don't. I really didn't want the word 'fetish' in the title because I thought it would pigeonhole me into that genre, which it ultimately did. But that's okay. The one big redeeming factor was that they were able to get Vicky Goldberg to write an intro to the book. For those of you who don't know her, she is the photography critic for the New York Times and is highly regarded for her essays and books about photography.

"The Beauty of Fetish" was released in September of 1998 in separate English and German versions. I still don't own a copy of the German version so if anyone out there can hook me up with one, please let me know! It sold very well and actually became one of Stemmle's best-selling books. It even made New York Daily News Ten Best Photography Books of 1998 list. Because of the success of the book, two years later Stemmle wanted to do a new book but this time focusing on the work I had just shot after having moved to Los Angeles from Chicago a few years previous. But more info about my second book later. Eventually Stemmle went bankrupt as a result of a domino effect when one of the world's largest book distributors went bankrupt as well and couldn't pay Stemmle all the money that was owed them. Of course that meant that us artists never got most of the royalties promised to us. In the end however, the prestige and validation of having been published by one of the most respected photography publishers was worth way more than money. Today I have a small amount of personal copies which I'll always hold onto and cherish. On eBay, copies of the first book go anywhere from $150-$500 of which I see no money. Oh well...

First Fetish Foto

I actually consider this my very first fetish-oriented photograph. The year was 1983. I was always trying to get my then-girlfriend to wear strange tight shiny clothes cuz for some reason I liked it. Sometimes I succeeded so i was sure to take some pics. This shot was taken on the campus of St. Louis University.

The image was scanned from the original 35mm negative which I recently found. I had processed it myself in my dad's darkroom down in the basement.

Coma Diet was my old band in Chicago. That's where the 'diet' in my name came from. We were like the Beatles, except not as good and American. We were also like the Monkees in that we all lived together, except we lived in Chicagos's Wicker Park back when it was a total bad-ass neighborhood and rent was only $300 a month for a 5-bedroom apartment. We sounded like a cross between Roy Orbison and Einsturzende Neubauten. We made several tapes of our music, and they even got played on some indie radio stations around the country. We've been recently approached by some new labels about re-releasing some of them but that means I have to find the original tapes, which I believe are in an old Keds shoebox in some closet in my place. Coma Diet consisted of Michael Dalton, Steve "Diet" Goedde, Dave Selsley, and Chris Hanley. No reunion is planned as of this publication.

This past weekend was the opening reception of the LA NUDE exhibition at A&I in Hollywood. Curator Don Weinstein has been curating the event every other year for the past 20 years. It was a great turn-out, and I got to show with several of my favorite photographers. Images from the show were beautifully compiled in an exhibition book in which all proceeds benefited the Aftermath Project. The participating artists lined up and signed hundreds of copies of the book for the attendees. There were also nude models available to have your photo taken with but unfortunately I was stuck behind the signing booth all night!

The show will remain up for the next few months and then will move to A&I's Santa Monica and North Hollywood locations.

Catwoman

Last week was the opening of the Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy exhibition at the Fashion Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The original Catwoman latex costume that Michelle Pfeiffer made famous in Batman Returns is part of the exhibit. Syren Latex made the costume back in the day and was asked to piece together the original costume for the show. The original costume had not been taken care of properly and had mostly disintegrated. So it was up to Jeff at Syren to assemble the original parts with new latex elements to make a proper costume for the exhibition. Jeff even brought on board my longtime friend Molly (formerly of So Hip It Hurts Latex) to help out on the hood portion of the costume. Since I work with Stockroom (who owns Syren), I had the chance to witness and document firsthand the restoration of this iconic piece of fetish fashion.

All the ripped parts of the costume were individually molded pieces of rubber which were then attached to the costume surface.

Kumi's Shower

This was taken backstage at the West Coast Fetish Ball after Kumi's performance with Midori in which she was covered in black ink and had hundreds of dead fish dumped on her. They were taken as fun snapshots but I liked the resulting quality so I 'artified' them and slapped them together as a little composite piece.

Myspace is now censoring

Yesterday I had written to a friend on Myspace, and I had to use the words "sex toys" in order to describe what the Stockroom sold. When they received the email, Myspace had replaced "sex toys" with ### ####. And then this morning, my photographer buddy Geoff Cordner informed me that Myspace had removed all links to his site from his Myspace profile. I tried it on my profile, and sure enough, all links to my site now direct to the Myspace home page. Umm, I think we're living in China now.

I know I've been lazy about posting the sexy stuff lately but part of the reason is that I haven't been shooting that much. Since August, I've only done 3 personal shoots (Ulorin Vex, Aradia Ardor, and Jade Vixen). I go through long periods of non-inspiration during which I work more on business or promotional aspects of my art. Since September I've been working on my new, long-delayed book which should be released by March. More information later...

Snapped with my Treo, I came across this nice little scene the other day of an abandoned shoe in a pile of broken car window glass.

Sorry for not posting much lately. I've had that damn illness a lot of people have right now. It lingers and won't go away. I hear it lasts 3-4 weeks. I've just started week 2. Ughh.

Luckily my cold hasn't stopped me working on my big secret project for early 2008. Details will be forthcoming once I have an estimated date of completion. And because of this project, I haven't been shooting much at all for the past 5 months. Besides doing some commercial stuff for Stockroom/Syren/Stormy, I've only done 3 personal shoots within that amount of time.

I was saddened to hear the news this morning of the death of Tom Snyder. He played a major part of my development when I was a kid. I remember trying desperately to stay past the Tonight Show to watch the Tomorrow Show. It was there that I was introduced to many pillars of today's alt-culture. I was in awe seeing such acts as Nina Hagen, Iggy Pop, the Plasmatics, the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Public Image Limited, and Elvis Costello. It was also where I first saw John Waters and Divine. I was only 12-years-old but he planted the seeds of what made me who I am today.

Stockroom/Syren Desert Shoot

Some new photos I did for Stockroom/Syren a few weeks ago featuring Justine Joli and Kimberly Kane. We did an exhaustive 2-day shoot out in the middle of the 110-degree desert. Luckily, we shot at an old 1960s house (with pool) which allowed us to duck inside when the heat got too bad.

BTW, Syren is NOT going out of business. They were thinking of closing the Beverly Blvd store and moving to a bigger location in Silverlake. That will probably happen but not for at least another few months. Some people got the information all wrong and the rumors started flying. Syren is doing quite well and even got the costume commission for a major studio movie adaptation of a certain graphic novel which will be out next year.

Oh! Bondage Ball is tomorrow night (Independence Day eve) at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood. I will be showing work along with Perry Gallagher, Micheal Helms, Christine Kessler, and Ken Marcus. Click the link for more info.

Got back from Europe on Sunday. The above photo was taken at my gate at Heathrow before I boarded my plane back to LA. Once I arrived at LAX, I ended up setting off the radiation alarms in customs due to some radiation testing I had to go through the day before my trip. Good thing I had my doctor's notes on me so I wasn't suspected of carrying something more sinister into the country. Seems like there's something wrong with my heart, and my cardiologist is trying to figure out what's going on. Apparently I've got some artery blockage even though I've always had outstanding cholesterol and have never smoked ever in my life. More tests later this week.

Other than that, I'm dealing with jet-lag, but not too bad. I'm just a few hours off my usual schedule, and I anticipate I'll be normal by the weekend. I've been planning a big blog update about the trip in my head but the task seems too overwhelming to me. My trip was so big and varied that I feel it would take a day to compile all the notes and sort out all the photos. I've got a lot to share and am anxious to work on it. Just have to find the proper time and motivation. More soon...
